ESS Artistic Residency: Tim Bishop / Beniamino Gentile

Tim Bishop is the Director & Curator of the Mono Festival of One-to-One Performance. He is an artist and spatial audio designer based in Lund and his practice focuses on creating personal connections between artwork and audience, prompting individual and, often, emotional responses through sensory, evocative and highly aesthetic experiences. His work has been shown in Sweden, Norway, Romania, Russia and the UK, including performances at Lunds Konsthall; Dunkers kulturhus, Helsingborg; Inter Arts Center, Malmö; Galleri CC, Malmö; and Kulturhuset, Stockholm.

While Ben, who comes from the aerospace & defence industry, works with similar tools in his current role as Mechanical Design Engineer to help ESS with their design and installation in the Target.

Tim said, “Ben and I have been discussing ways of increasing public perception of what ESS is through the senses and imagination, rather than through knowledge. Specifically, we have been talking about using spatial (3D) audio techniques as perceptual tools to bring people into the facility virtually in order to grasp the scales and significance of what happens inside the building and how this relates to society.

“We talked about an idea for the residency to use sound measurements and impulse response recordings of spaces inside ESS (ESS’s “acoustic fingerprints”) as a way of bringing people inside with their imagination and to understand the magnitude of work at ESS through feeling,” he continued.  Ben added: “I like to think I am here because I love science, and that, together with sport and music, are my passions!”
